Back in August of 2021, 20 females and 20 males competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 3 divisions of Sport Climbing for their chance to become an Olympian. A total of 16 moved onto the finals six of whom walked away with Olympic medals.

Who are the Sport Climbing Winners of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

In the men’s combined event of the Tokyo Olympics, the gold medal went to Alberto Gines Lopez (Spain), the silver medal went to Nathaniel Coleman (United States) and the bronze medal went to Jakob Schubert (Austria).

In the women’s combined event of the Tokyo Olympics, the gold medal went to Janja Garnbret (Slovenia), the silver medal went to Miho Nonaka (Japan) and the bronze medal went to Akiyo Noguchi (Japan).

Alberto Gines Lopez (Gold Medalist)

Alberto Gines Lopez of Spain was the first man to win a gold medal in Olympic Sport Climbing. Born on October 23, 2002, Lopez was 18 years old at the time of this win.

In the finals, Lopez won 1 combined point in the speed category, 7 combined points in bouldering and 4 combined points in lead. This gave him a total of 28 points and put him in the lead by just two points.

In addition to being an Olympian, Lopez is also known for winning two silver metals in the Climbing World Cup as well as several golds in the Climbing European World Cup.

Janja Garnbret (Gold Medalist)

Janja Garnbret of Slovenia was the first woman to have won a gold medal in Olympic Sport Climbing. Born on March 12, 1999, Garnbret was only 22 years old when she achieved this feat.

In the finals, Garnbret won 5 combined points in the speed discipline, 1 combined point in bouldering and 1 combined point in lead. This total of 5 points won her first place by 40 whole points.

Some other notable achievements of this rock climber include being the first female climber to on sight an 8c (5.14b) sport climbing route, winning the most IFSC gold medals and winning 8 IFSC world championships.

Nathaniel Coleman (Silver Medalist)

Nathaniel Coleman of the United States of America was the first man to win a silver medal in Olympic Sport Climbing. Born on January 1, 1997, Coleman was only 24 years old at the time.

In the finals, Nathaniel Coleman won 6 combined points in the speed category, 1 combined point in bouldering and 5 combined points in lead. This gave him a total of 30 points, just two points behind gold medalist Alberto Gines Lopez.

Coleman is a highly decorated climber. Some of his feats besides his Olympic win include winning the USA Climbing Bouldering Open National Championships three times.

Miho Nonaka (Silver Medalist)

Miho Nonaka of Japan was the woman to have won silver in Olympic Sport Climbing. Born on May 21, 1997, Nonaka was only 24 years old at the time.

In the finals, Nonaka won 3 combined points in the speed discipline, 3 combined points in bouldering and 5 combined points in lead. This gave her a total of 45 points putting her in second place.

In addition to being an Olympian, Nonaka is known for being a gold medalist in the 2018 Climbing World Cup, being a silver medalist in the 2016 and 2022 World Cups as well as the Youth Climbing World Championship and being a bronze medalist in the 2015 and 2018 Climbing World Cups.

Jakob Schubert (Bronze Medalist)

Jakob Schubert of Austria was the first man to have won bronze in Olympic Sport Climbing. Born on December 31, 1990, Schubert was 30 years old at the time of this win.

In the finals, Schubert won 7 combined points in the speed discipline, 5 combined points in bouldering and 1 combined point in lead. This gave him a combined point total of 35, securing him his place as a bronze medalist.

Scubert is also known for being the male to have won the most IFSC medals, and being a 3-time gold medal winner for the Climbing World Cup.

Akiyo Noguchi (Bronze Medalist)

Akiyo Noguchi of Japan was the first woman to win bronze in Olympic Sport Climbing. Born on May 30, 1989, Noguchi was 32 years old at the time.

In the finals, Noguchi won 4 combined points in the speed discipline, 4 combined points in bouldering and 4 combined points in lead. The total of 64 points put her in 3rd place.

Noguchi is also known for placing first in the Climbing World Cup 7 times, placing second 12 times and bronze 3 times.

Who were the Losing Finalists of Sport Climbing the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

In the men’s combined event, losing finalists include Tomoa Narasaki of Japan, Mickael Mawem of France, Adam Ondra of the Czech Republic, Colin Duffy of the United States of America and Bassa Mawem.

In the women’s combined event, losing finalists include Aleksandra Miroslaw of Poland, Brooke Raboutou of the United States of America, Anouck Jaubert of France, Jessica Pilz of Austria and Seo Chae-Hyun of South Korea.
